Matthew 20:26-27

THE INWARD LIFE OF A STEWARD
Surrender

It shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave.

Everything about following Christ is counter-cultural. Matthew 20:26-27 highlights a couple of these paradoxes. Jesus says, It shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave (RSV). According to Jesus, the way to make it to the top is by going to the bottom, and the way to make it to the front is by going to the back. There is nothing about this reasoning that makes any sense, except for the fact that the One who created us tells us that is the way we end up where we want to be. The question we must ask ourselves is, “Are we going to do it our way or Jesus’ way?” Think about it.
