Matthew 5:3

THE INWARD LIFE OF A STEWARD
Viewing Self Spiritually

Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:3, Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven (NASB). It is quite easy living in this prosperous country to get confused about what it means to be poor in spirit. The poverty that Jesus is referring to is not material, but spiritual – a poverty that humbly acknowledges that we are not only spiritually bankrupt, we are begging-poor – and we always will be. Being surrounded with all our finery, we can find it quite difficult to even admit how desperately poor we are spiritually. Our egos get in the way. We are too proud to admit we are in such a humiliating state of spiritual poverty and but by God’s grace we would be hopeless, doomed to remain begging-poor forever. Think about it.
